Is there anyone who has never had a headache all their lives? May be only very few.
There are many ways in which one could classify headaches.
In western Medicine one of the ways is to classify according to the aetiology or the cause, and where it originates from. The cause could be from inside the head or the cranial bone, or on the bone, or outside the skull, or originating from the neck.
THeadaches with structural changes like tumour or meningitis could be best treated with western medicines and surgeries.
Headache due to vascular origin, sinusitis, due to tension, where there are no structural changes but are chronic could be treated with Acupuncture.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) it is classified by the area in which the patient feels the pain and the Meridian which runs there. They are classified as on the sides or temple (Temporal) , Fore head, on sinuses (Frontal), Back of the head and the nape of the neck (Occipital), and top of the head (Vertex headache).
These could be helped with acupuncture and also the cause for these headaches should be analysed and should be addressed along with.
Migraine headache has three stages. A pre-head ache stage (where there occurs visual disturbance, or partial loss of vision,) the headache stage with nausea and vomiting, then the hang over where the patient could be hypersensitive to light and sound.
Acupuncture for Migraine is said to work like a reset button. It tunes the brain to get out of the pain groove into which the migraineurs has fallen. The underlying pattern is diagnosed with the help of the accompanying symptoms, pulse and tongue.
There are instances where Migraine could be associated with menstrual or menopause symptoms. Here they are associated with hormonal changes. So in these conditions, the hormonal imbalance is targeted with special acupoints in the acupuncture treatment plan.
One could expect the frequency, intensity of the headaches to come down with the acupuncture sessions spaced according to individual needs. The treat plan would depend on how chronic the problem is.
With Dr Tan's balance method one could help not only PAIN but also FUNCTIONAL disorders.
